CCAC Offering Free Classes in Computer Information Technology Basics and Court Reporting Basic Training
CCAC students learn valuable professional skills in the college’s Court Reporting and Computer Information Technology classes.

The Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is providing FREE basic Computer Information Technology courses and basic training Court Reporting courses beginning next week.
The Computer Information Technology "Computer Basics" and "Internet Basics" classes are each six sessions and offered in collaboration with Literacy Pittsburgh. Each session will be held in-person at the Homewood-Brushton Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays, November 7, 9, 14, 16, 28, 30 (no classes the week of Thanksgiving).
The Computer Basics course runs from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Beginners will gain confidence in using a computer for everyday tasks. This class focuses on basic mouse and typing skills, identifying places to store and save files, and troubleshooting basic computer issues. Learners may take a NorthStar digital literacy assessment and have an opportunity to earn a certificate.
The Internet Basics course will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will focus on developing skills for efficient use of the internet. This includes bookmarking, navigating web pages and internet safety. Students can gain insight into using keyboard shortcuts and search terms to make searching online for employment and information easier. Critical assessment of websites to find the best information will also be covered. Learners may take a Northstar assessment for an opportunity to earn a certificate.

The Court Reporter Basic Training course, offered in conjunction with Project Steno, is an introduction to court reporting and will take place virtually Thursday evenings, Nov. 9 through Dec. 21, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Zoom class will include real-time theory, taught by Court Reporting faculty at the Community College of Allegheny County.
Project Steno is a nonprofit organization that partners with leading institutions to promote the stenographic court reporting/captioning profession. The six-session course provides participants with a hands-on opportunity to learn the basics of steno theory in a virtual classroom environment. While the class is a first step before entering a two-year court reporting program, there is no obligation to enroll at CCAC.
The class is open to the public. Current and prospective CCAC students are encouraged to participate. Interested individuals do not have to apply to the college or be a registered CCAC student to attend. Space is limited, and registrants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
